Safeguarding Policy and reporting standards

Overview
Mukikute supports Safeguarding principles for all vulnerable populations including children and helps partners uphold these principles as well. MUKIKUTE contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly, SDG3, striving to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages. MUKIKUTE is committed to safeguarding all people, particularly children, vulnerable adults and beneficiaries of services from any harm that may be caused due to contact with MUKIKUTE staff.

Mukikute has zero tolerance against abuse and exploitation of vulnerable people. MUKIKUTE also recognizes that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and that it should put in place reasonable measures to ensure, as far as possible, the safety and well-being of vulnerable people working with MUKIKUTE and those in the communities in which we live.

Guiding Principles at Mukikute
Inclusivity
Everyone has an equal right to protection from abuse and exploitation regardless of age, race, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy or having a child, gender reassignment, language, religion, political or other opinion, national, ethnic, or social origin, property, disability, birth or other status.
Survivor-centered
The best interests of the vulnerable person are paramount and shall be the primary consideration in our decision-making. MUKIKUTE will take responsibility to meet all obligations regarding our duty of care towards vulnerable people and take action where we believe that a child, young person or vulnerable adult is at risk or is harmed.
Shared responsibility
MUKIKUTE will ensure that employees and volunteers are inducted into our Safeguarding Standards and procedures as a key part of the recruitment and onboarding process. Moreover, everyone at MUKIKUTE must share and bear the responsibility for the implementation and improvement of this policy.
Effective communication
When working with or through partners or sub-contracted agencies, MUKIKUTE will ensure that all partners are informed and in compliance with safeguarding principles and approaches set out in this policy.
Risk minimization
MUKIKUTE recognizes that an element of risk exists, and while we may never be able to remove this, we need to do all we can to reduce it or limit its impact.
Confidentiality
MUKIKUTE respects confidentiality and has a responsibility to protect sensitive personal data. Information should only be shared and handled on a need-to-know basis, that is, access to the information must be necessary for the conduct of one’s official duties. Only individuals who have legitimate reasons to access the information are allowed to receive it.
Regular improvements
MUKIKUTE commits to monitoring the implementation of the safeguarding policy. MUKIKUTE will develop assessment, reflection and feedback mechanisms to evaluate any improvements that can be translated into policies and practices. These mechanisms will include quarterly incident reviews, as well as regular policy reviews, and refresher training. This policy will be reviewed every three years and earlier if necessary.
Dignity and Respect
MUKIKUTE fosters a work environment where the principles of dignity and respect for all staff, associates, partners, collaborators and communities, in all locations are at the centre of what the organisation does. This policy applies the principles of being non-judgemental when hearing safeguarding concerns and complaints.

All Mkikute staff are trained in Safeguarding and observe Safeguarding principles. The following related policies guide MUKIKUTE staff

Anti-trafficking in Persons Policy
MUKIKUTE is opposed to all forms of trafficking in persons and is committed to ensuring that all operations and programmes are delivered with a strong zero-tolerance policy to enable staff and partners to combat human trafficking. Mukikute prohibits its employees, consultants, sub-recipients, and subcontractors from engaging in severe forms of trafficking in persons, procuring commercial sex acts, using forced labour, using deceptive or unlawful employment strategies and charging employee recruitment fees.

Code of Conduct
Since its inception, Mukikute has put people at the heart of its activities and is committed to helping them live a healthy life full of dignity. After working with several donors and partners, Mukikute has curved a reputation of its own, as a reputable community-based organization. All Mukikute staff including Board members, are aware that their actions may impact Mukikute’s reputation. As a result, staff operate with the guidance of a strict Code of Conduct.

Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH) Policy
MUKIKUTE joins the global community in strongly supporting the core principles regarding the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse, established by the UN Secretary General’s Bulletin on Special Measures in 2003. We believe that all people have the right to live their lives free from sexual violence. MUKIKUTE therefore practices zero-tolerance against sexual exploitation, sexual abuse or sexual harassment.

Whistleblower policy
The whistle-blower policy is intended to encourage anyone who is involved with Mukikute to report suspected or actual occurrence(s) of fraudulent, unethical or inappropriate events (behaviours or practices including but not limited to sexual harassment, or showing undue favours over contractual matters) without retribution. MUKIKUTE is committed to providing safe spaces filled with integrity and respect for ALL people as well as for financial resources. The core value for Mukikute is equal rights for every human being regardless of gender, ethnicity, religious belief, disability, sexual orientation, social class and age.
