Background

MUKIKUTE is an independent registered non–governmental nonprofit organization civil society organization based in Temeke Dar es Salaam. working in the communities to combat further spread of TB and HIV; and mitigate its impact among the community members who are infected.

In 2003, 20 members participated in a study conducted by Dr. Elliud Wandwalo1 collaboratively with Temeke Municipal Council and PASADA. The participants later collectivized in spirit of mitigating the impact of Tuberculosis and with the support of Temeke Municipal Council and PASADA, MUKIKUTE (Mapambano ya Kifua Kikuu na Ukimwi-Temeke meaning fight against Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS in Temeke.).

Considering their association with the development partners, the group was cognizant of the health challenges facing communities in the region. Consequently, the organizations focus was kept limited either in terms of geographical coverage and interventions. With continued support, MUKIKUTE has been carrying a range of interventions aimed at increasing community knowledge/awareness on TB and TB/HIV and promoting positive attitude and support towards people living with HIV (PLWHIV) and Tuberculosis.

MUKIKUTE has a membership of over 200 members (operating as Community Health Volunteers – CHVs) across 7 TB Clubs organized and supported by respective district TB and Leprosy Coordinators (DTLCs) After 18 year of existence MUKIKIUTE have emerged as a strong community-based TB/HIV expert in building and empowering communities to take part in TB and HIV response.

The types of activities undertaken by MUKIKUTE range from advocacy, communication and social mobilizations to linkages and treatment support services for TB and HIV with a major focus on the priority and key communities including people who use drugs (PUD); adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), females at high risk of HIV (FSW) and men at high risk of HIV (MSM).

Owing to the link with national & international funding agencies MUKIKUTE enjoys a diverse portfolio, characterized by partnership and collaboration with institutions like USAID, UNAIDS, UNODC, MoH
